Defense must improve

Mike Wallace and the Miami Dolphins defeated the Patriots on Sunday, and while many in New England are still concerned about the team's offense without Rob Gronkowski, my issue is with the defense

Don't get me wrong, Ryan Tannehill made some big-time throws in this one. But at the end of the first half, and in Miami's final drive of the game, the Patriots' defense couldn't make the big plays. They couldn't make "championship" plays. And that's ultimately why New England failed to clinch the AFC East in Miami.

Listen to Monday's show on DigRadioBoston, as Barstool Sports' Jerry Thornton joined me to break down Sunday's tough loss. Also, Barstool's Rear Admiral checked in to talk Bruins and Shawn Thornton's 15-game suspension.

Where is Orpik's suspension?

Shawn Thornton was handed a 15-game suspension on Saturday afternoon, and I reacted to it on WEEI-93.7 FM in Boston later that night

Listen to "The Danny Picard Show every weekend on WEEI. Here is the audio to my opening segment on Saturday, with my reaction to the suspension, but more importantly, my reaction to the non-suspension for Brooks Orpik.

'We got this'

The Patriots will be without Rob Gronkowski for the rest of the season, and that has caused many in New England to give up on any hope for a championship

But as I explained to begin the second hour of Tuesday's show on DigRadio (now available on iTunes), as long as Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are still running the show, you shouldn't give up on the Pats.

Even without Gronkowski, and even with some major injuries on the defensive side of the football, these Patriots still have a good chance to earn a first-round bye AND win their home playoff game in the Divisional Round.

And then there's the AFC Championship in Denver. About that. Well, Belichick will have his defense ready, regardless of personnel.

Haven't we learned our lesson?

Listen to Tuesday's show, to hear my latest Patriots rant, and my strong guarantee: New England will be playing in this year's Super Bowl.

Also, Comcast SportsNet's Sean McAdam checked in with a Red Sox update from the MLB Winter Meetings in Florida.

Thoughts on Patriots, Bruins, and Shawn Thornton

Rob Gronkowski is out for the season, and what needs to come next for the New England Patriots was just one of several important topics on Monday's show

Boston Herald Patriots Insider Jeff Howe and Barstool Sports' Jerry Thornton joined me Monday on DigRadio to discuss Gronk's injury and what the Patriots need to do moving forward in order to be a contender.

I believe the Patriots can still contend. Listen to Monday's show (now on iTunes) to hear what I think the Patriots' strategy needs to be moving forward.

Also, I closed out the last half hour of the show with my thoughts on Bruins enforcer Shawn Thornton. And believe it or not, one former NHL fighter has me thinking.

Maybe Sean Avery is on to something.

MLB offseason reaction on WEEI

Mike Napoli is back with the Red Sox on a two-year, $32 million deal, and that combined with what the Yankees are doing, should make Red Sox fans happy before the Winter Meetings begin on Monday

Napoli back with the Red Sox is a no-brainer. And I got all the scoop on his new deal and the rest of the Red Sox offseason moves from WEEI.com's Rob Bradford on Saturday.

Listen to "The Danny Picard Show" from Saturday on WEEI-93.7 FM, as I talked to Bradford and Comcast SportsNet's Mike Giardi.

Also, I opened the show with my thoughts on the Napoli deal and the Red Sox offseason, and why the New York Yankees are doing it wrong.

What are the Yankees thinking?

Robinson Cano is on his way to Seattle with a 10-year, $240 million deal, making the New York Yankees look foolish in the process

The Yankees really messed up their offseason. They signed Jacoby Ellsbury to a monster contract, and called Jay-Z's bluff.

Now, Cano is a Mariner. And all of New York should be questioning Brian Cashman.

On Friday's show, I called out the Yankees for completely screwing up their offseason, while praising Jay-Z for actually getting Cano this type of deal, and making another bold statement in the process: he won't be giving any discounts to New York City.

Also, Comcast SportsNet New England's Tom E. Curran joined me to preview the Patriots/Browns game. And I gave "Pic's Picks" for NFL Week 14. Get the replay of every show by subscribing on iTunes.

Yankees sign Ellsbury

Christmas came early for Jacoby Ellsbury, who signed a seven-year, $153 million deal with the New York Yankees on Tuesday night

Contrary to reports from ESPN, my sources tell me the Red Sox never even made Ellsbury a formal offer.

I explained why, on "I'm Just Sayin" Wednesday.

All about Vazquez

The Red Sox signed veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a one-year deal this week, opening the door for the organization's ultimate plan behind the plate

Forget about Pierzynski. Meet Christian Vazquez. Sources tell me the 23-year-old catcher could be Big-League ready "by this June."

Vazquez is being called "the next Yadier Molina" inside the Red Sox organization, and is the real reason they wouldn't give Jarrod Saltalamacchia a multi-year deal. So they brought in Pierzynski for one year, setting the stage for Vazquez as the franchise catcher of the future, with that future beginning soon.

Listen to "I'm Just Sayin" on Tuesday to hear what people are telling me about Vazquez.
